The Thai judge shot him in court after accusing him of political interference in court decisions
On October 4, 2019, after receiving five people accused of five murders in southern Thailand, Judge Khanakorn Pianchina read a statement accused of political and judicial interventions at the Yala District Court. After that, he took a pistol and shot himself in the chest. The incident became a national issue and led many to question the independence and credibility of the courts. Judge Khanakorn has been injured and is now recovering.
Judge Khanakorn issued a 25-page statement explaining his actions. Khankorn wrote that he had ordered his superiors to punish the accused, although there was sufficient evidence to make the verdict. On the day of shooting it was uploaded to Facebook, but quickly disappeared.
In 2018, authorities arrested five suspects accused of murder, secret organization, conspiracy and gun-related crimes in southern Thailand. If the crime is proved, the accused may be sentenced to death.
Southern Thailand has been experiencing tension for many years and many groups stressed their right to self-determination. Under Buddhist rule there is a large Muslim population in this area. The government took emergency measures; this means that state forces can arrest people without a warrant and detain suspects for a certain period of time.
Judge Khanakorn believed that evidence obtained during interrogation and detention could not be legally accepted under government emergency rules.
In a statement, lawmakers asked them to make changes to the Civil Court to ban the review of orders before they were read. Currently, high-ranking officials in the judiciary may review the decisions of judges before deciding on the case. Senior judges can force subordinates to rewrite their initial decisions. Judge Khanakorn also called on the government to “materially exploit yar judges.
Return the orders to the judges Give the people back justice. The weight of my statements may be as light as a feather, but the heart of the judge must be as strong as a mountain.
Judge Khanakorn feared that his decision to punish the accused would trigger the investigation and ruin his career. However, they also could not punish the defendant for lack of evidence. He decided to shoot himself before he saw the way out.
The shooting quickly attracted national attention. Some army supporters accused the judge of pretending to have created a political dispute. Some believe it is part of conspiracies to assist the opposition in the investigation of the judiciary.

Just like that, the government launched an investigation into the allegations made by the judge to maintain the credibility of the judge.
Attiya Achkalovsit, columnist for the Bangkok Post newspaper, summarized many of the reactions in Thailand:
He made his life focus on what he believed: the system is as bad as it is serious, especially when it is a judge. How disappointed can one be?
The editorial of the Bangkok Post emphasizes the complex political landscape of Southern Thailand.
This is a very complex problem that could lead to the wrongful conviction or sacrifice of innocent people. In such a case, such injustice is a source of resentment to the Muslim majority and hinders state efforts to bring peace to troubled areas.
The Intercultural Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in southern Thailand, has a recommendation:
Immediately transfer all persons involved in the offense of Referee Khanakorn from their positions: Such an order shall ensure that future investigations are appropriate for all parties without interfering with the internal impact and the designated investigation. The team should also include external consultants. The investigation should also take protective measures to ensure repeated interventions with judicial independence.Depressive depression is the first cause of suicide.
